Why AI names your competitor instead of you
Usually it isn't that they're better. It's that they're easier to be sure about.
This is the question owners ask first, and the honest answer is uncomfortable: the business AI names is rarely the best one. It's the one the engine can describe with the least risk of being wrong.
An assistant answering "who's the best plumber near me" is making a small bet. If it names a business and the details turn out to be wrong — closed, moved, not actually a plumber — that's a bad answer. So it reaches for whichever business it can state confidently.
They're easier to verify
Your competitor's name, address, phone and hours say the same thing on their website, their Google profile and three directories. Yours says "Suite 4" in one place and nothing in another, and the phone number changed two years ago. Neither of you is lying. One of you is just easier to check.
They're easier to quote
Their site says "Emergency call-outs across Laval and Chomedey, two-hour arrival window, $149 plus parts." Yours says "Quality service you can trust." The first one can be dropped straight into an answer. The second gives the engine nothing to repeat.
They've been talked about more recently
Not more overall — more recently. Twelve reviews from this quarter read as an operating business. Four hundred reviews that stop in 2022 read as a question mark.
They're readable at all
If your pages only assemble after JavaScript runs, or your robots.txt blocks the crawlers that answer questions live, you were never in the running. This is the most common single cause and the least visible one, because the site looks perfect to you.
What this means
You're not competing on quality of work, which is frustrating if your work is better. You're competing on how easy you are to be certain about. That's a fixable problem, and it's mostly unglamorous: make the details agree, write something specific, keep the reviews coming, let the crawlers in.
