Why your ads aren't working
Work through it in order. The answer is rarely the part everyone blames.
When ads underperform, almost everyone reaches for new creative first. It's the most visible part and the most satisfying to change. It's also the least likely cause. Work through it in this order instead.
1. Is anything being measured at all?
Before anything else, confirm the conversion actually registers. A broken pixel, a form that errors silently, a tracking tag on the wrong page — these look identical to "the ads don't work," and they're common. If your dashboard shows clicks and zero conversions, assume a measurement problem until proven otherwise.
2. Are people arriving and leaving immediately?
If they land and bounce in seconds, the ad and the page disagree. An ad promising one thing and a page about something else breaks the thread. So does a slow page — people leave before it renders and you're billed anyway.
3. Are they starting and not finishing?
If people begin your form and abandon it, that's the friction point and it's the cheapest thing on this list to fix. Count your fields. Every one you remove is people who finish. Ask for the minimum now and the rest later.
4. Are they converting but never buying?
Leads that go nowhere usually aren't a lead-quality problem, they're a follow-up problem. If you respond in a day, most of them have already hired someone else.
5. Only now, the ads
If measurement works, the page matches, the form converts and the leads close — then it's the targeting or the creative. That's the last box to check, not the first.
The uncomfortable part
Four of these five are on your website, not in the ad account. Most "the ads don't work" is a funnel that leaks somewhere the ad platform can't see.
